Epic Reading Project book #23

This is another one of those books which was a pretty solid read, but which didn’t particularly set my heart on fire. If I were giving starred reviews for these books, this would probably be… eh… 3 stars out of 5.  It’s got an interesting and creative premise — a spaceship-based society which sends its children planetside to do their best to survive in oftentimes dangerous isolation — but at its heart it is a coming of age story which (IMHO) doesn’t do much that’s new and different in that regard. What it does do new-and-different is its discussion of privilege and ethics, but even in this regard, it’s fairly low-level discussion and commentary.

Still, it’s not a bad little book, and if you’re itching for a YA bildungsroman with spaceships but also horse-drawn carts, then this may well appeal!
