Epic Reading Project book #22

What a weird book. Weird in a kind of cool way, to be sure, but still weird.

So you’ve got these aliens who live on Earth in the far future, after humans have disappeared, and much of the novel looks at the ruins of human culture through the alien perspective.

There were passages which were genuinely gripping, which had me on the edge of my seat, but overall the book reads like a really strange dream. There is a lot going on with it, thematically — the retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, the motifs of societal nonconformance, and so forth.

It had me through the first two-thirds or so, and it lost me towards the end. The “really strange dream” thing always seems to fall apart in jigsaw puzzle pieces at the end of books like this. Maybe it’s me, I don’t know. YMMV.
